All that being said, Expert GPS appears to be a real, easy to use, seamless application, especially for Geocaching purposes. I've got just about everything that Mapsource has available for loading into my Garmins. More professional cartographers will use sophisticated GIS programs, but you can do a lot with TOPO! without having to get into scanning and referencing maps. My personal library of files has gotten quite large, and I have posted many of my maps on the mapxchange, but it is not easy to update them as I field check them (many were drawn by hand from other hiking maps), and mapxchange is quite slow to post files that are loaded. I make a track log of a hike by overlaying my tracklog onto the map after I have hiked an area of that map. I have downloaded some maps in the NY area and field checked them. Some is good and a lot is not so good, but there is an awful lot posted for California. TOPO! has a site on their website ( )called mapxchange where people can load and download files with trail data. What you need is to have files of trail data that you can merge onto a topo map. There are many sources of USGS topos, but all of the trail data is out of date. I have both TOPO! and Maptech Terrain Navigator and that I find myself using TOPO! much more because it is better for drawing custom maps.
